Talking about the audio 

Below is a snapshot of my edited audio with layers of music and sound effects underneath it from Adobe Audition. The top layer is my recording and as you can see I had to cut a huge amount of pauses out of the original. The layer underneath in a brown colour is the sound effect of a car engine that comes in quickly. There was no editing done to that layer. The third blue audio is music that I got off a no copyright site. I used it as my intro music for the interview. The last layer which is in light green is a repeated atmospheric audio clip of traffic that was recored outside the college grounds. I had to cut the clip so short as there was some disturbance near the beginning and I had no time to go record more, so I had to repeat the same clip over so that it sounded like a long clip of traffic going past.

P5: You need to record sound elements for use in a podcast

Setting up appropriate equipment  

Above is a image that I took before starting the interview. It contains visually how I recorded the interview, a laptop with my script on so I can run by it and base most questions off of it and my phone which was used to record the whole thing. I kept it in place so there was no disturbance to the final audio, for example little bumps or static. 

We were both sat on a sofa where there was space between us and the phone and laptop so we didn't interact and ruin the audio. The environment was set in my mum's bedroom as that happens to have no outside noise breaking through. 

Following the audio script  

The script that I stuck to is present throughout all my work on this blog. When interviewing my mum, the questions that were on the script stayed the same when spoken verbally. However maybe once or twice, I reworded the question as it didn't sound right once off paper. Other then that the script stayed the same.




Describe what sounds i've used and why i've done that

The image above shows the first audio effect that I put into my editing of the radio podcast. It's timing is short and quick but it's still effective. It's used in the opening of my production as a theme which matches with the storyline of the podcast. The actual audio is of a car engine revving up. I thought it would give a hit to what my production is about if i put it into the opening with one music on top of it. 

This second image connects to the first image as it's the music that overlaps the car engine for the opening music. It's not copyrighted and is off of a free music website that does short music for videos. It doesn't have an emotion or a set speed as it's just a melo tune.  

This third and final audio effect is a atmospheric sound of traffic that I recorded outside of the college along the main road. It was a short recording as I had interruptions throughout the original audio, so i had to cut it and then just repeat the audio over and over so there was some background noise to underlay the podcast. 

Feed back on my interview 

Constructive 

- Atmosphere is a bit repetitive.

- Some of the questions could be reasoned - let the subject speak. 

- Could be a minute shorter at heart!

- 2 minutes-5:48 should be followed by some of the early answers after rage. 

- Make transitions smoother.

- Sounds like it needs to carry on.

Compliments
- The most interesting section is the US/UK comparison.
- Good story/content but audio was a bit quite at times.

- Like the casual style of the interview.

- Nice communication between the interview.
- Funny and good content.
- Funny parts near the end.

Transcript of my recording 

Start: Hello, today I will be interviewing Sharon about her views on road rage in Cambridge and how she moved from the States to England. 

Question 1: 

So on a normal weekday do you find the traffic different from a weekend? 

Answer: 

The traffic on the weekend is much lighter..Obviously. On the weekdays going to work you've got the rush hour in the morning and rush hour in the evening so it's quite... You've got rush hours where as on the weekends you've don't. Although on the weekend going into Cambridge uh into the town centre it can get choc-a-block just through people trying to get into the Grafton Centre and Lion  Yard car parks, especially near christmas and also in and out of the Beehive Centre on a weekend.. 

Question 2:

So do you get rage at this time or is it more during the week.

Answer:

 Oh defiantly during the week as your more on a  timer you know, you've got to work, you've got to be places and fit it in around work um where as on a weekend you aren't on a timer as you don't have to work, time constraints, you know? Unlike during the week obviously.

Question 3: So what times during the day do you think is the worst? For you personally.

Answer: 

Uh the mornings and evenings.

Question 4: I'm going to ask you questions about the states but it still relates to the road rage. Back in the states do you think the traffic was worse or the same as here? 

Answer: 

Oh i think traffic in the states around the big cities is um ten times worse then it is here. Urm... But yeah the traffic although your roads are bigger and you have more lanes. Cause England was made for horse and cart, a lot of the roads are smaller as the towns are still built for that and not the cars like Cambridge and you have the influx of the Londoners and immigrants coming in now it's ten times more crowded and packed, it always seems worse cause the roads are compact and your motorways are not motorways, they're just like motorways for ants. The ones in the states have eight lanes and stuff so you can get more people on there and take more traffic and stuff. But it's still very very packed in the states hurendessly, urm so i guess more people moving into places so both countries have the same problems.. Although they're trying to introduce the bike system, you know more bike trails around the towns and cities and stuff that people can take and try to off load them onto the bikes instead of them being in the car.

Question 5: So how do you feel about that? 

Answer: 

Urm if the bike trails are kept away from the cars then i'll be fine. I do NOT like the bikers.. Urm and thats the end of that one. They're in the way, they're dangerous, they over take each other and don't look where the car is. The car drivers now, you know the baddies and all the rest of it..

Question 6: Okay sooo did you prefer it back in the states? Like did you regret moving over here?

Answer:

No I didn't regret moving over here. I don't like to view things like that, it was a experience. There are valuable memories and a world experience like new cultures, new people. I never regretted being over here, no. 

Side question: What year did you first move here? 

Answer: 

First year i ever came over here was 1973. 

And then i got homesick and left then came back in 74 and 75. Then i came to stay in 1976 to just stay. 

Question 7: So back to the road rage what's the worst thing you think you've said while having road rage? 

Answer: 

Uhhh i don't think i can even put that in the tape hahaha. It's uh it's a Billy Connely type of saying you know if anybody listens to Billy Connely. (What's one of the worst things then? Cause i know you can't say the worst thing haha) Well i'm just going to go with a really really low here, i'll just say you idiot but the swearing just goes to the top of it.. (The shouting, the swearing) It doesn't do any good cause they still do it. OH MY GOD and the Hills Road cycle lane! Oh my God no no no, it was just built for cyclists, designed for cyclists, BY a cyclist. Never ever took into account drivers and they now have on one side of Hills Road to Cherry Hinton Road on down to Long Road they have a cycle lane on the pavement .... Urm they already have people and cyclists and that was the original thing and now they have a cycle lane to go along with that and they still ride on the pavement and on the road, therefore driving the pedrestians nuts cause you don't know where they're coming from when they're coming up behind you, urm and ringing those little bells OH MY GOD TAKE THAT BELL AND SHOVE IT WHERE THE SUN JUST DOESN'T SHINE AND THEN STRANGLE YOURSELF! WHAT HELL IS THAT! NO WAY NO WAY CAN YOU HAVE A LITTLE DING DING DING ON YOUR.. OH MY GOD PICK THAT CYCLIST UP AND THROW HIM OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH, OH MY GOD NO WHO INVENTED THAT STUPID LITTLE BELL ANYWAY, OH MY GOD NO NO NO!! 

I just don't like cyclists, i don't give a damn who you are! Get off the bike, either walk or get in a car or take the bus! Do not get on a bike!

Question 8: Soo straying from the rage questions.. To calm you down... What caused you to move over here the first time? 

Answer:
Oh cause my dad is English... So is my gran, most of my family is English.

Question 9: Okay what did you find different when moving? ..... So what did you find different from the states?

Answer: Oh urm the money! When i came over the decimalistation had been in for a few years so the money was completely different, you had half pee's with everything, like something would be seven and a half pee.. Urm fifty and a half pee... It was all little half pee's. And they used to get stuck and lodged in your pocket and your wallet, things like that and people hated them. But yeah you used to half pee's with everything. Urmm so the money was different... Urm obviously the lingo was different the language.... The slang the slang!, sorry the slang was different, not the language. Like you guys say chips we say fries, you say jumpers we say sweaters, urm just things like that you know. The car we call it a hood you call it a bonet, we call it a trunk you call it a boot... (What was the word you say when someone sneezes?) Oh gezundheit! Yeah they don't say gezundheit over here.. And when i first came over here people said cheerio when they said goodbye, instead of see ya later or bai, you know it was cheerio. So yeah there was differences. Uh we didn't have fish and chip shops, so that was a real.. Like why do they.. You know? Like your fish and chip shops were like our burger places, do you know what i mean? Like we have burger places you have fish and chip shops sooo.. (A big difference) yeah yeah big differences like that. Clothe sizes were different...
OH and when i first came over here urm you guys have things called 'faggots'... In the freezer section (Oh the burger things?) ...Yeah.. Nasty looking thing (Mr.Brains!) Yeah!! Well of course in the states 'faggot' was gay. So it was like "what's that doing in the.. What's that?!" You know what i mean? It was like oh my God, they've come out and said this!? Oh my God and they sell it as well? OH MY GOD. So yeah that was a real shocker. Oh yeah and 'To Let'  you know places to rent? But you say 'To Let', i always said to my dad "why can't they put the 'I' in Toilet, don't they know how to spell toilet?", but it wasn't.. It was 'To Let' haha.. Soo yeah those were some weird things that happened...

OH MY GOD AND BEING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD!!! Everything is the other way around!!! So i'd wait for buses on the other side of the road! And they'd take ages to come and then you'd get on and say you want your ticket and you wanna go to such an such a place and they'd say "oh you have to go back across the road! I'm going in the opposite direction" and i was like ohhh. That took me AGES to get around, cause in the states it's the opposite ways. Like you look in the opposite direction and you look up and there'd be a car on top of you and your like "ooo aha sorry!" hahaha.. So yeah the traffic flow is all on the wrong side. And when your learning to drive, what a nightmare! Cause you have to be on the other side and get in the other side of the car, yeah there's a lot of problems like that for people and i think the french drive on that side of the road as well so they have that problem as well.

Question 10: So how did you find driving over here then if you had that problem then? 

Answer:
Oh very difficult haha I wanted to kind stay by the curb and the instructor said "no no you got to get out into the middle of the lane kind of" and it's like oh my god yeah no a nightmare. Absolute nightmare, i didn't think i'd make it through but.. yeah very difficult.. AND your roads are very small so that doesn't help like i said they are built for horse and cart and now there are cars so...

P4 - Be able to plan the production of a podcast containing a variety of sound elements

1. You need to use the ideas you have developed for at least four sound elements to plan the production of a podcast with a running time of 3-5 minutes. 

• An audio script - 

The script will be more just question based as I don't know how my mom will reply to the questions asked so I don't want to script the answers as they won't be as interesting or raw as they would be if there was no automated answer. Below is a rough draft of what my potential script will look like once I am happy with it and have checked it over to make sure the questions are right. 

I think planning out a script before hand is a better approach to doing an interview  as it helps pull the dialogue along swiftly and can even help you come up with new off the script questions at the moment of the interview. It gives you time to plan everything out so there is minimum faults doing the task at hand.

The recce reports and risk assessments below show that I have done a run through of where i'm going to record and what damage could come from that and how to avoid it at the time of recording.

First assessment is for if i record in my living room.

Below is a mapped out version of the are where I recorded my interview. I decided not to record while driving as that proved to be to much distraction and the audio came out scratchy. Therefore  I recorded at a quiet location where I had access to everything that was needed. 

Legal and Ethical Issues

Legal: 

I don't have any copyright music as i used a website that gives out non copyright music/sounds for people to use when making videos/audio files.

Ethical: 

All i can think of that could potentially be a problem would be some content that my mum seems to say, like the word "faggort" which she uses as it's the name of a type of food. 

P3.2 - Take 2 of the ideas and begin to develop them further

On Thursday 29th September we as a class had a pitching session of our ideas. We had to talk about our two best ideas then get feedback on that. That feedback was to be written down then developed further.
Below I have started off my development with my best two ideas that my teacher had liked and agreed with.

It talks about what each idea is, where I could potentially interview the interviewee, and an idea of what the sound effects could be.
My teacher said I could mix the two ideas together and ask my mum questions about both the road rage and America which would help keep the interview interesting.

I now need to develop the Atmospheric sound, Music and Dialogue/speech. 

• Music - For idea one I could potentially use the music my mom listens too in the car from her phone. It would make the interview more relaxed and calming. Or for when the rage kicks in i could edit in some angry music to set the mood. 

• Atmospheric Sound - There will be sounds of traffic in the background. Depending on the weather there could be rain hitting the car or thunder. There could possibly be horns being hit or emergency sirens rushing past. If the car windows are down then there would be chatter from people going past. 

• Dialogue/Speech - The dialogue will be between myself and my mum. I will be asking her questions about traffic, road rage, what life was like in the states, and more. I will ask the question and wait for her to reply. If i think she could say more on the subject then i will converse and get her to open up a bit more on that subject. 

(On a side note, I think recording will either take place during the car drive, or after back at my house and I can add sound effects in afterwards to make it sound as close as I can get it to sounding like we were recording in the car live.)

P3.1 - Come up with 5 different ideas for a 3-5 minute factual podcast

My five ideas of what I could do a radio interview about. 

I personally like the first two ideas and I will go forward to pitch them two as they interest me the most and think it would make a good interview. I have a few more 'back up' ideas that i will put below.

I now have approval for my first two ideas that will be developed next.
